Top Picture Books For the
High School English Classroom

Picture books can be a wonderful, enriching addition to any classroom, even for secondary students. Many picture books are quite sophisticated and complex in terms of the subject matter and possible interpretations. They also provide ample cross-curricular areas of focus including: analysis of the illustrations (Art), discussion of historical/current events topics included in some picture books (Social Studies), adapting picture books into graphic novels, short films, tableaux, or skits (Drama, Acting, Film Studies), and many others.

The following books are some of my favourite picture books for teaching secondary ELA:

  • The Mysteries of Harris Burdick – Chris Van Allsburg
  • Wolves – Emily Gravett
  • Black and White – David Macaulay
  • Science Verse – Jon Scieszka & Lane Smith
  • The Stinky Cheese Man (& Other Fairly Stupid Tales) – Jon Scieszka & Lane Smith
  • Bluebird – Bob Staake
  • The Arrival – Shaun Tan
  • The Red Tree – Shaun Tan
  • Flotsam – David Wiesner
  • Tuesday – David Wiesner

WHY Bring Picture Books Into the
High School English Classroom???

  • To introduce & demonstrate literary elements/terminology in a fun, innovative manner
  • To teach narrative structure & the elements of storytelling
  • To address complex ideas like postmodernism in a comprehensible way
  • To challenge the notion that “text” only means words printed on a page/screen
  • To remind students of their nostalgic feelings, ideally fostering a love of reading for the sake of reading & for fun!
